A corset is defined as a body shaping underwear garment that has become popular as an outerwear garment in it's own right. Corsets are boned, close fitting and usually hooked and laced at the rear. Under bust corset are worn as lingerie under outer garments, over bust corsets can be worn as outerwear. A basque is defined as any tight fitting bodice garment, but not as tightly fitting as a corset. Basques are often referred to as a bustier in the USA.
